Janesa Kruse is a martial artist and teacher known for her passion, talent and strength. Janesa, a sixth-degree Black Belt, has remained active in training, fighting and teaching. She began her martial arts training at age 21.
In 1980-81 she was rated among the top 10 women fighters in national point fighting by Karate Illustrated. She was the first woman to fight in the Northwest region in the men's black belt division for overall grand champion and team fighting. Janesa is thankful to have had the opportunity to fight with the best of her time, earning the respect of her peers. Seeking to better herself and find a true art, she trained with a few exceptional martial artists including Professor Remy Presas, founder of Modern Arnis.
During the 1980's Janesa was a trainer at the National Women's Martial Arts Federation camp where she met and trained with Mas Goeroe Agoeng Barbara Niggel who introduced her to Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen. She was so inspired by Poekoelan's beauty, purity and depth that she chose to devote herself completely to training and teaching Poekoelan.
In 1981 she opened her first school, Women With Heart Fighting Arts on N. Williams in Portland, Oregon. She helped marian van leeuwen start a Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen school in Amsterdam, which today is run by her students in Holland. Janesa partnered with women in Holland to develop women's self-defense trainings. She has taught internationally and locally and has worked with Adult and Family Services, colleges, businesses and non-profits to bring self-defense training to women throughout Oregon.
In 1984 Janesa changed her school's name to One With Heart and moved it to S.E. Hawthorne. In 2008 she acquired a second school in the St. Johns area. At both locations she provides high quality, authentic martial arts and fitness training in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Janesa is a creative, knowledgeable teacher who sees the highest potential in every person and has an intuitive ability to guide her students to achieve more than they thought possible. She teaches through the example of her life. Her commitment to her art and the empowerment of all people inspires her students to find the best in themselves and in others.
Scott Montgomery is respected for his calm, powerful presence, his precision and expertise as a martial artist, his humor, and his straight forward integrity. He holds his students to the highest standards while demonstrating true compassion and kindness. Scott is a sixth-degree Black Belt in Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen. He has exceptional knowledge and ability to teach effective self-defense techniques. Scott describes his introduction to Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen as "a matter of fate." At age 15 he attended a demonstration at Mas Goeroe Agoeng Barbara Niggel's school in Lowellville, Ohio. He won a door prize, the entire first phase of Poekoelan training which is called Cun Tao. He completed Cun Tao in 14 weeks and never looked back. He was so inspired by Mas Goeroe Agoeng's strength, speed and energy that he completely committed himself to his training. He initially found Poekoelan to be an engaging way to get into great shape. He loved that classes were demanding and he approached each class with dedication and focus. When Mas Goeroe Agoeng moved her school from Lowellville to Cape Cod, Scott continued to train with her there. To this day, he travels frequently in order to train with Mas Goeroe Agoeng. Scott first met Janesa in 1986 when he came to Portland for advanced testing. For years they had heard about each other's talents, skills and fighting ability. He got off the plane, put on his gi, and bowed into his first fight with Janesa. He describes that meeting as "love at first fight." For Scott, training is a life-long passion, not a vocation. It has guided and shaped his life for 35 years. Scott is honored to share Mas Goeroe Agoeng Willy Wetzel's art by teaching at One With Heart Tulen Center.
Joel Much is a practitioner with exceptional strength and skill who is kind, gentle, and respected for his ability to make training accessible to everyone. He is a versatile teacher who has worked with beginning, intermediate and advanced students at One With Heart Tulen Center for over 10 years. He teaches with the belief that Poekoelan has a different lesson for every person. Joel began his training in 1992 at Lewis and Clark College. Training brought such focus and joy to his life that he remains a dedicated student and teacher. Today Joel is a fifth-degree Black Belt. He is continually inspired by how much more there is to learn. Joel is a Global Logistics manager for KEEN Inc. When he is not working or training he enjoys spending time with his family and traveling.
David Tircuit is an expert teacher whose extraordinary knowledge and skill comes from his life-long practice of Chinese healing and fighting arts. He teaches beginning and highly advanced students, challenging and inspiring everyone. David has over 25 years training in Tai Chi, Xing Yi Quan, Qi Gong and Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and over 12 years professional teaching experience. His primary teacher was Grandmaster Wong Jack Man of the Jing Mo Chinese Physical association in San Francisco. David was head instructor at the Evolving Body/Mind Institute in Oakland and ran the martial arts and Qi Gong program a Studio E Dance, Fitness and Healing Arts Center in Santa Barbara. He was on the faculty of the Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine teaching medicinal Qi Gong and Tai Chi for two years before relocating to Portland. David has been teaching at One With Heart since 2004. He is a licensed acupuncturist and sees patients in his downtown Portland practice.
Tyrone Spencer is a positive, enthusiastic and charismatic trainer who loves working with people. He is a certified CrossFit Level 1 trainer with focused experience teaching varied, high-intensity functional movement including kettelbell swing techniques. Tyrone is a graduate of the Fitness Specialist program at San Diego City College. He interned with UCSD Community Pediatrics and Network for a Healthy California in the PoGo program (Parents on the GO), administering and planning excercise programs and providing nutrition information to Mid-City moms on-the-go. Tyrone is a creative visual artist particularly interested in fashion design. He is new to Portland and is enjoying meeting new people and exploring the city.
Adalia Corriveau's life-long passion for athletics inspires every class she teaches. Her positive energy, smile and sense of humor put everyone at ease and make her fitness classes both fun and challenging. Adalia is an experienced, skilled coach and boxer, formerly registered with USA Boxing. She has instructed fitness classes at One With Heart since 2004. Impressed with the beauty and strength she saw in Poekoelan she began her Tulen training in 2005. Today she is a first-degree Black Belt in Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen and a certified Tulen Self-Defense instructor. Adalia loves helping others find their personal best and experience a sense of well-being. When she is not teaching she enjoys reading, spending time with friends, and taking long walks with her dog, Eddie.
Kati Traunweiser is a practitioner who moves with grace, beauty and power that truly expresses the energy of Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen. She is a teacher who is completely committed to her students, supporting them through life challenges and celebrating their accomplishments. She finds great joy every day watching students grow and find their strength. Kati is a fifth-degree Black Belt in Poekoelan with over 24 years of experience training and teaching. Kati has 23 years of corporate experience in healthcare and is an entrepreneur who has founded two small businesses.
Antonia Tzantarmas' kind, gentle, welcoming nature has brought her a devoted group of students who enjoy her personally as much as they benefit from her knowledgeable guidance in practice. Antonia has been practicing Qi Gong for 17 years and instructing for 16 years. She feels it is a privilege to pass on this self-healing practice and is inspired by the way Qi Gong offers a path for continuing to improve throughout life while aging with beauty and grace. Antonia has four grown children and 10 grandchildren. She is devoted to her large extended family that lives both here and in the Netherlands. She is an artist who loves many art forms, including design. She also enjoys bicycling, swimming, gardening and supports a variety of environmental and humanitarian causes.
marian van leeuwen is an advanced martial artist who integrates her training into all aspects of her life. She brings joy, love and compassion to everyone she knows. marian began training Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen in the Netherlands and in the 1980's she started a Tulen school in Amsterdam. In 1992 she moved to Portland where she continues to help Janesa run One With Heart Tulen Center. marian is a fifth-degree Black Belt dedicated to developing and sharing the healing aspects of Tulen through Tulen Bio-Energy Wellness. Her intention for Kembali is to bring healing and peace to the world one person at a time. marian is a runner, biker and swimmer currently training for a triathlon. She loves to knit and to share her beautiful handiwork with her friends.
Danielle loves "Ah-Ha moments" when a child moves with his or her own unique grace and beauty. She is inspired by the joy kids bring to their training every day and sees the potential in each child she teaches. She has an exceptional ability to be at once animated and focused, energetic and calm, demanding and compassionate. Danielle began training Poekoelan Tjimindie Tulen in 1997. She is a third-degree Black Belt and a certified Tulen Self-Defense instructor. She became the KiDS program coordinator in 2004. Danielle teaches KiDS classes at both of our locations; Hawthorne and St. Johns. She has a child of her own with who she enjoys training with. She also loves spending time with family, digging in the dirt, and splurging on a good cup of coffee with a cookie.
Gerry Donaghy is a practitioner, teammate and instructor respected for his strength, consistency and patience. He is a skilled martial artist whose love of training immediately puts students at ease. He began training in 1995 at Reed College and continues to be inspired by his teachers who push him beyond the limits he sets for himself. He is a third-degree Black Belt who has been instructing for over 10 years. Through instructing he has discovered that perfection is a journey, not a destination. He appreciates how much he learns in the process of passing on knowledge to students. Gerry is a book buyer for Powell's Books. In his spare time you find him reading, watching movies or trying to curry favor with his cat.
Reggie Davis is a pro-boxer returning to the ring after a 4 year break! His record from 2001-2007 is 17-3. As an amateur Reggie was the six-time Oregon Golden Glove Champ and winner of the 2000 Western Olympic Trials Jr. Middleweight. He began boxing when he was in middle school and has traveled the world boxing. He has taught boxing fitness to women and teens since 1999 and loves having the skill and ability to teach people to do something they have never done before. Seeing the mental and physical change as they train "is what gets me up everyday." Reggie loves spending time with his daughter, exploring new restaurants with his girlfriend, riding his bike and going on adventures to new places.
Brooke loves practicing Poekoelan and laughing with kids in our Transported After School Kung Fu Program. She is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and enjoys instructing both kids and adults in CrossFit workouts. Brooke craves helping people make healthy changes in their lives from childern through the elderly. She believes there is a strong connection between physical, mental, and emotional health in our well being. In addition to exercise, she knows the importance of eating a whole food diet, rich with variety in fruits and vegetables to fuel our bodies and positively enhance our lives. Brooke kickboxed through college before competing in races, triathlons, and duathlons in the Midwest. She was inspired on vacation and later moved to Portland to enjoy bike friendly streets, neighborhood cats, and take advantage of Mt. Hood's long snowboarding season. She is happier than ever to live in a city with culture rich in sustainable and holistic lifestyles.
