She has an exceptional ability to be at once animated and focused, energetic and calm, demanding and compassionate, and this serves her well in her role as the Kids Program Coordinator.
Intro to Shaolin Kung Fu Instructor When did you begin training?
I used to compete for USA Boxing. After a serious injury to my left arm and elbow joint, my boxing coach recommended that I train internal martial arts for strength and mobility. I trained Tai Chi Chuan and I Chuan for a few years while continuing to coach and teach boxing classes. I also trained Pukulan and earned my 2nd degree black belt.
Women's Self-Defense Coordinator How did you first find Pukulan? When I moved to Portland I serendipitously lived just a few doors down from One with Heart. Although I walked past the studio nearly every day, I don’t remember ever ‘planning’ to start training.
Little Monkey's Instructor Before moving to Portland in 1998, Suzy was a preschool teacher in Chicago. She now loves teaching in our Little Monkeys program which she describes as a natural fit for her. After all, it’s “totally Kung-Fu preschool!” Like many practitioners, Suzy was introduced to Pukulan by her daughter who started training as a three-year-old Little Monkey.
Hati Hati Healing Practitioner Marian began her Pukulan training in the Netherlands and in the 1980s she started a Pukulan school in Amsterdam. In 1992 she moved to Portland where she continues to help Janesa run One with Heart.
